when the production company working on the ALONE project reached out and asked if I wanted to consider being on their tv show I said no, “I do not like TV and those survival shows” I do not watch programed television and I do not agree with the consumerism part of it. they asked me to watch a few ALONE episodes and then reconsider it, it was their last week of casting for season seven.
I watched a few episodes and quickly realized I always wanted to do something like it. Being alone in a very challenging place and try to survive for as long as I can. I asked if it was true that I was going to be alone, when they confirmed it I said I wanted to try for it. I went through the casting process and was eventually picked for the competition alongside nine other amazing contestants.
being on Alone was a true vision quest and right of passage. the competition was everything and more than I expected. I learned a great deal about me and my craft. it helped my skills as a survivalist grow and it pushed my body mind and spirit to deal with the harsh environment and survival situation.
One of the most important connections Im working in my life is the connection to my food, I believe that the mass production of food to satisfy the needs of the growing population has stressed the web of life. For that reason I try to grow food and to ethically provide my own protein. My belief is that by strengthening our relationships with local farmers and growers and by understanding the life and death process of the animals we eat we can provide a safer future for the planet. Because of this belief system, being capable of bowhunting, trapping and foraging my own food is what makes me a more ethical, grounded and complete human. Being able to show this journey to others so they may think about their relationship to their food made this Alone survival journey the necessary and responsible thing to do.
From the time I began my survival quest at Great Slave Lake to the very end of the journey, I was shown messages that made it clear that I was doing what I was supposed to.
Amazing things happened to me during my quest. I was able to grow personally and professionally, and I had an incredible time from the very beginning. I remind myself that this experience has only been a tiny glimpse into a meaningful life of connection. This life's work is the real deal and I look forward to keeping it going.
